On the morning of November 10, , the British sieged the fort with cannon fire in an attempt to gain traction from their failed attempts of re-supplying, starting what is now known as the largest bombardment of the Revolutionary War.
Five days after the start of the ambush from British troops, the men were soon faced with over cannons firing at them in a bombardment that would lead to the evacuation of the fort, not before the men lite it ablaze in retaliation. After the revolutionary war, Fort Mifflin was repaired and active again in During this time the Union and Confederacy were forced to find locations to house thousands of prisoners after the breakdown of prisoner exchanges.
Fort Mifflin was converted to hold military prisoners during this time like many other buildings and locations throughout the country.
Confederate prisoners captured during the Battle of Gettysburg were taken to Fort Mifflin in July of Many of the prisoners stayed at Fort Mifflin on short terms before being moved to a larger prison.
One of the most famous prisoners at Fort Mifflin during this time was William H. The regularity and frequency of these encounters have made the Fort the subject of much recent investigation by various groups and individuals.
A variety of audio and visual phenomena has been perceived by people from all walks. Among the most often mentioned are:. Heard countless times and with such volume, that the Philadelphia police have been called out on numerous occasions, but upon arrival, no evidence of a damsel in distress could be found.
As political stress increased between the colonists and Britain, the construction stopped. In , Benjamin Franklin directed revolutionary forces to complete the construction of Fort Mifflin. During the revolutionary war, an American garrison of men stationed at Fort Mifflin, just across the inlet from fort Mercer, were able to hold 2, troops and British Navy ships at bay for three weeks which turned out to be long enough for George Washington and his troops to make it safely to Valley Forge for some much needed rest and to re-group for battle.
The British regained control of both fort Mifflin and fort Mercer in mid-November of The fight was long and hard. Fort Mifflin was in shambles afterwards. The Continental Army under the leadership of George Washington would begin to rebuild the fort in The guide knew—and probably laid very still in his bed knowing—that 3am happens to be the time which those at the fort used to switch shifts for the next watch.
Or take a story from a reenactor that chose to spend the night in the casements. He fell asleep with a fire in the fireplace and the door locked from the inside.
Some time later, he started awake. There was a man in his room, a soldier in Revolutionary War gear, warming himself by the fire. When the reenactor looked twice, the figure was gone. His door was still locked. Some saw jiggling doorknobs, a figure peering from an unoccupied room and a hissing shadowy figure.
To some staff, the occurrences are so common as to almost become old hat. Once a dark figure disappeared into one of the buildings at closing time, only to leap out at the guide that went to hunt them down. Pencils and files spontaneously going missing from office drawers. Windows spring open in the dead of winter.
You get the idea. On top of all of these are the handful of personalities who are regulars. Before they could reconcile, the daughter got sick and died.
