You're just a number to them to fill the position, if it's not you it will be someone else. There's no motivation, appreciation, or compassion in this department. All business! Everyone that works for the department is bitter. I absolutely think the department needs a revival for sure! Force overtime, no back staff, no advancement, no raises in over 18 months. In my 11 years working as a Detention services Officer I learn a lot about talking to youth.
I have made impacts on many lives. However with the law changes and the departments new agenda to follow more progressive models soft on crime it has resulted in Juvenile Hall becoming an unsafe place to work.
People call out all the time, people that do are force to work overtime, no back ups anywhere. I am trying my hardest to get out of that toxic environment. You will soon see this place is a circus. The management is a joke. No advancement. Even if you place in band 1 4 times. So people are forced to call out. They literally deny people their baby showers and honeymoons.
The youth are getting more and more out of control. Staff are injured every single day. Pregnant people are forced to work in the unit even with youth threatening to punch them in the stomach and kill their baby.
No money in the world is worth it. Everyone is walking around with ptsd and anxiety after dealing with the stuff we do. It takes a toll on you mentally and physically after a while. Great pay. Over the years of working for the Probation department, I have worked all phases of Probation including public relations and customer service, this includes talking to concerned parents on the phone. Usually during the most busy part of the day, where I had to use computer systems to track inmates, find adjudication hearings, and finding what Juvenile hall the minor had been transferred to was a daily occurrence.
Good communication was essential to every day job functions, multitasking phone functions along with directing up to staff members where to cover positions within this jail like setting for security reasons was always a fast paced environment, was also in charge of moving staff during riotous situations. Customer service was essential where it payed to be empathetic to parents of minors that were arrested and worried about their children.

My team makes me wanna come to work every day. Our clients are easy to maintain if you have no fear and don't have a problem enforcing rules and regulations. The hardest part about this job is sometimes you leave there wondering how did i get paid when i had so much fun. As a 10yr vet i have made it known that i am for the workers and enforce the rules and make sure that i have a solid positive working relationship with the inmates.

Primary I would ensure the safety and security of minors in the criminal system.
I feel like the juvenile detention center is daycare for criminals and that the Probation Department needs to be reformed to better the community. The hardest parts about the job is working with poor management in a horrible work environment that doesn't give breaks.
