Austin ulster body

A new shock absorber from Oxfordshire Sevens, and a flat front spring from Ian Dunford completed the bits I needed, so with it all bolted together with new bushes etc where necessary, it ws back rolling again! My back axle was rebuilt professionally with a 5. Fitting was relatively straightforward, although I had to take the bushes that go into the ends of the springs to get reamed.

Mine are the linked version, ie the front and back brakes operate when the pedal is pressed. All the bits were present in my box of stuff.. I replaced the cables with new both axles were professionally built up with new brake shoes and new cast drums from Tony Betts and cleaned up and freed off the rest.

The cross shaft was a challenge! My bits came complete with the correct steering wheel and column, connected to a steering box for a saloon. This will not fit the ulster because the angle the column needs to sit is different. There are two ways to correct this, the cheap er and easy er fix is to buy a bracket to mount the existing box on, or buy a new reproduction of the correct box — so obviously a proper way or the wrog way. I now had enough big bits completed to start putting some stuff together!

The cross shaft assembly has to work in harmony with the brake pedal assemble connected through the bottom of the steering box. Assembling the previously cleaned and sorted cross shaft was fairly straightforward. I put a new bush in the nearside as it was destroyed in the removal.

The steering box was bolted onto the chassis, and the pedal and connecting shaft offered up. After a call to one of my consultants, the first thing that came out was that I was missing a tapered washer needed inside the chassis to straighten up the nut on the brake pedal pin.. OK back again, where are we now?

Back from the powdercoaters.. To get the springs off I really needed to get the spring pins out of the hub, so first I had to remove another 2 of those ubiquitous cotter pins.
